The SkyCity Hamilton Northern Spirit will have a wealth of expertise to call on this season, with the appointment of former Australian international and Sydney Thunder coach, Jo Broadbent as assistant coach.

As a player, Broadbent enjoyed a glittering which spanned 60 one-day internationals and 10 Test matches, with three years' service as Australian vice-captain and a World Cup victory in 1997 standing out as highlights.

Broadbent has forged an equally successful coaching career, winning five Australian Women's National Cricket League titles in six seasons with the New South Wales Breakers, as well as two T20 titles with the side and the inaugural Women's Big Bash League crown with the Sydney Thunder.

Northern Districts (ND) general manager performance and people, Daniel Archer, said Broadbent's appointment was in-line with ND's philosophy on creating an environment which develops individuals across all programmes.

"Whether it's players, coaches or support staff, we want to develop our people and see them excel," said Archer.

"Through the sharing of her experiences and knowledge, I know Jo will be able to contribute to the support and growth of many within our Spirit programme and our organisation.

"We are simply thrilled to have her."

Broadbent says the approach of ND is what convinced her to sign for the 2019-20 season.

"The professionalism and initiative shown by the Association to have a position that assists a head coach was very appealing," says Broadbent.

"Being able to share my experiences, guide others and personally develop provides an environment I want to be involved in; I'm looking forward to the opportunity and growth for myself and others."

This perspective of shared growth is a key focus for Broadbent and her ambitions for the upcoming season.

 "For me, it is about giving back and helping others; this includes stepping out of my comfort zone and learning further lessons about coaching and operating a team," Broadbent said.

"My goals with ND are to identify areas to improve and bridge the gap so we can see successes both on and off the field."

Spirit head coach Kari Carswell is thrilled to have Broadbent on-board and is eager to see the impact she will have on the group.

"Jo's coaching background speaks for itself and I'm certainly looking forward to working alongside her to develop and nurture the group we have," said Carswell.

"There is no doubt that her experiences within the Australian pathway and working with some of the very best players in world cricket will add huge amounts to our group, not only for this season but for many to come."

Fans and players alike should look forward to Broadbent's involvement this year, as she hopes to implement her philosophy of "inspiring, developing and challenging athletes and staff to be our best," while also looking to help Carswell's side "play an exciting brand of cricket to inspire the next generation."
