Spirit look to secure home Grand Final in potential dress rehearsal
Published on 21 Feb 2020
A home Grand Final is within the SkyCity Hamilton Northern Spirit's grasp ahead of the last weekend of Hallyburton Johnstone Shield round-robin fixtures.
Two wins against the Wellington Blaze last time out secured a maiden Grand Final berth for the Spirit and, one win from their two matches this weekend will secure Grand Final hosting rights.
The Spirit's opposition are the Auckland Hearts; the team currently occupying second and only other side who can finish first.
With the Spirit holding a four-point lead, the race to host the Grand Final could go to an exciting final round if the Hearts win Saturday's match.
It also means there is a distinct possibility that this weekend's matches could be Grand Final rehearsals, with the sides meeting again in the decider on March 14.
An interesting sub-plot to the weekend involves individual bragging rights, with Katie Gurrey and Eimear Richardson looking to round out the regular season as top run-scorer and wicket-taker respectively.
Gurrey sits first in the run charts with 541, 112 ahead of second-place, while Richardson's 18 wickets puts her first-equal alongside the Hearts' Bella Armstrong.
Rounds nine and ten of the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield are being played Saturday, February 22 (10.30am) and Sunday, February 23 (10.00am), at Seddon Park, Hamilton.
