Poverty Bay and Bay of Plenty Winner in the NZ Cricket Community Cricket Awards
Published on 24 Oct 2016
Two of the awards have gone to the Northern Districts region. David McDonald of Poverty Bay has been named Cricket Development Officer of the Year and Bay of Plenty Cricket has received the award for the Best Female Engagement Strategy.
David McDonald is the longest serving Cricket Development Office in Northern Districts. He started in the role in 2001/02. In our smallest District Association David has had to be all things to all people. He has shouldered a significant administrative burden as well as the hands on coaching and development roles. He has effectively been "Mr Cricket" in Poverty Bay for the past 14 years.
Bay of Plenty Cricket has successfully run a GoGirl cricket programme in the Western Bay of Plenty for the past four summers. The aim of the programme is to give females in years 4-6 an opportunity to experience cricket as well as develop the fundamental movement skills of catching, throwing, hitting, and bowling. The programme finishes with the GoGirl Super 6's (Term 4) and Rainbow Cup (Term 1) festival days where the schools involved get the opportunity to test their newly developed skills in a match situation against the other schools taking part in the programme. The recruitment of players in this age group then flows onto intermediate and secondary school programmes. Rebecca Yee, the Bay of Plenty Women's Development Officer is responsible for the delivery of these programmes.
Northern Districts Cricket congratulates both worthy award winners.
