Kamo High School win ND Gillette Cup T20 qualifier finals tournament
Published on 12 Mar 2019
The Gillette Cup T20 qualifier finals tournament was held at Manurewa, with four teams, who had qualified from their Districts, competing.
The morning saw two semi-finals take place, with Kamo High School overcoming Morrinsville College, and St. John's College defeating Bethlehem College.
The winners from the morning round then progressed to the final in the afternoon while the losers from the morning played-off for third and fourth.
The final was a closely contested game, with Kamo batting first and setting a total of 129/6 off their 20 overs.
The stand-out performer of the innings was without doubt Nathan Parkes, whose 70 off 63 balls formed the backbone of Kamo's score. Harry Pedersen, Jackson Neale and Jack Kane all produced solid bowling performances, taking two wickets each.
Kamo made the perfect start to their defence when Max Turner removed Jacob Clare second ball, but St. John's fought back and played with great freedom to race to 71-2 in the ninth over, before three wickets for only one run turned the match in Kamo's favour. The fifth wicket in this run was the vital one of top-scorer Ethan Price for 37; Nathan Parkes continuing his fine match by being the bowler to dismiss him.
Another handy partnership of 25 formed before the Kamo bowlers struck, which would again trigger a flurry of wickets which would eventually win them the match and the Wynn Bradburn Cup. Max Turner was the star bowler, taking 3/33, while every other bowler (Hunter Reid, Nathan Parkes, Billy Alexander-Crawford and Lucas James) claimed a solitary wicket. Nathan Parkes capped his brilliant all-round display by also claiming a run out.
While Kamo came out on top, St. John's will be somewhat satisfied as both sides qualified to contest the ND Regional Gillette Cup 50-over finals in Rotorua on March 25 - 29.
