The Fergus Hickey Rosebowl [Two Day Championship] resumes this weekend with Bay of Plenty playing Hamilton at Galloway Park and Northland hosting Waikato Valley at Cobham Oval.
Just prior to Christmas the Brian Dunning T20 tournament was held in Taupo. A full round robin involving all 6 DAs saw Bay of Plenty emerge unbeaten to take the trophy. Final points : BOP 20, Hamilton 16, Waikato Valley 12, Counties Manukau 4, Northland 4, Poverty Bay 4.
Bay of Plenty's success was based on the consistency of their experienced bowlers. Opposition teams were held to scores of only 92, 113, 108, 118, and 129. The top wicket takers were from BOP - Brett Hampton and Jono Boult with 9 each and Henry Collier with 8. The Hamilton trio of Anurag Verma, Campbell Rowell, and Freddie Walker also took 8 wickets each.
A feature of the tournament was the competitive showing by Poverty Bay, who have struggled in recent seasons. A rare win over Northland was a highlight for them and they provided the two top run scorers at the tournament - Ben Kerr 238 runs and Nick Hendrie 176 runs. Waikato Valley's Jake Gibson scored the only century and Blackcap Mitchell Santner, on the comeback from a major operation, was dismissed only once and averaged 119!
Owen Delany Park provides an ideal venue for this tournament and ND acknowledges the work of Ben Sherriff and his ground staff in providing quality pitches and outfields.
