The summer is coming, and cricket is set to launch into schools across the upper north island. Across Northern Districts, cricket has set an ambitious target to deliver cricket experiences and programmes to 53,750 boys and girls between Year 1-13. As the start of Term 4 approaches, 42 schools and over 7,768 boys and girls have already participated in our national programmes which allow children to experience striking, throwing, catching, running and team-work in a fun and inclusive environment. Northland schools have received continuous programmes throughout the winter period as part of cross code initiatives led by regional Development Manager Paul Hope. Partnering with KiwiSport, schools located in the Far North have participated in programmes promoting physical literacy through both cricket and AFL.
"The tamariki from Pamapuria School were excited to be given the opportunity to try different sports that are not commonly played in our community. They were taught skills that will be transferable into other sports and easily remembered from week to week. We would highly recommend the KiwiSport Multisport programme to other schools." -Dawn Reid, New Entrant Teacher, Pamapuria School
Schools across the Waikato including the Hamilton and Thames and Coromandel communities have all been eagerly engaged with Cricket Awareness sessions which offer students and teachers a fun introduction to physical literacy skills through cricket. "I just wanted to say a huge thank you to Hamilton Cricket and the two lovely coaches that came in today. I've heard nothing but great feedback from our teachers - and the kids had heaps of fun too!" - Trea Corr, Whatawhata School
Cricket is up and running in Bay of Plenty, with Rotorua schools jumping into our national summer sport as well as new initiatives bringing cricket to the students of Whakatane.
Counties Manukau and Poverty Bay are ready to launch into local schools in Term 4 with an ever increasing number of schools lining up to have cricket deliver national programmes of Cricket Awareness and SuperStar Cricket programmes, both of which support learning for physical literacy and small ball skills. In addition to these programmes, all regions of Northern Districts are preparing for our locally offered SuperStar Festival Days which will operate for boys and girls (mixed and/or individual) in Term 4 and Term 1.
